Checking for equivalence:

If two fractions are given to you, how will you check if they are equivalent or not ?

Let us take few examples and see

Example 1:

Consider two equivalent fractions 812 = 23

Cross multiply as 8 × 3 = 24 and 12 × 2 = 24

We see that the two products are equal.

Example 2:

Now consider the equivalent fractions 27 = 828

Cross multiply as 2 × 28 = 56 and 7 × 8 = 56

Again the products are equal.

Thus, two fractions are equivalent if the cross product (that is, the product of the numerator of one fraction with the denominator of the other) are equal.
