69% Tip Calculation

How to Calculate Reverse Tip Percentage

Step1 : Convert Percentage to Decimal

Divide the percentage added to the original by 100.

For example, if a tip 6 percent was added to the bill to make it $115, work out 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15.

Step2 : Add 1 to Decimal

Add 1 to the percentage expressed as a decimal. In this example,work out 1 + 0.15 = 1.15.

Step3 : Divide Final Bill Amount by Decimal

Divide the final bill amount by the decimal to find the original amount before the percentage was added. In this example, work out 115 ÷ 1.15 = 100.

The amount before the Tip% was added is $100.

Step4 : Subtract Original Amount From Final Bill Amount

Subtract the original amount from the final bill amount to find the amount added.

In this example, work out 115 − 100 = 15. You now know that $15 was added as Tip%.

How to Calculate a Restaurant Tip approximately without calculator

There are two useful arithmetic tricks to calculate tips:

If you are tipping 15 percent, multiply the pre-tax amount by 10 percent and then add half of that amount.

So, if you have a bill for $27.50, 10 percent is $2.75, and half of that amount is roughly $1.38.

The total tip would be $4.13, and a $4.20 tip would be perfectly acceptable.

Another easy method is to look at your sales tax amount. If your sales tax is roughly 8 percent, then double that amount and your server will get a 15- to 16-percent tip.

A 20 percent tip is simple to calculate. Just figure out 10 percent of the bill and multiply by two.
